Checking In: The Shelborne by Proper, Miami

The Shelborne by Proper, Miami

More than a restoration, The Shelborne by Proper is a reintroduction—of Miami’s golden-era glamour, thoughtfully filtered through the lens of contemporary design.

Location & Local Favourites

Set oceanfront on 18th Street, The Shelborne occupies one of Miami Beach’s most storied intersections: where the city’s Art Deco legacy meets its new creative pulse. Step outside and you’re moments from the Bass Museum of Art or a sunset walk along the Collins Avenue corridor—still echoing with mid-century glamour.

Further afield, the Wynwood culinary scene buzzes with experimental kitchens, while the Design District blends fashion, art, and architecture into one curated enclave. But you don’t need to leave the neighbourhood to feel the shift—this stretch of beach balances Miami’s layered legacy with its ever-evolving rhythm.

Rooms

Art-forward spaces, natural palettes, and terraces that frame Miami Beach.

The 251 rooms—including 32 suites and villas—are a study in warm restraint. Design studio ADC Atelier has reimagined the interiors with soft moss greens, terracotta tones, and powder blues that echo the landscape without mimicking it. Vintage windowpanes catch sunrise and salt air; bathrooms with Aesop amenities and travertine floors lend a spa-like calm.

Art is not an accessory—it’s embedded. From Jessy Nite’s woven cityscapes in the Townhouses to Hayley Moree’s palm-inspired paintings and ceramics by Clara Arbuniés, each space becomes its own quiet gallery. Signature suites—like the Two-Bedroom Penthouse or the Pool Villas—offer private terraces, kitchens, and framed views of both the Atlantic and the hotel’s historic pool deck.

Dining

Michelin-starred seafood, craft cocktails, and flavours rooted in place.

With five destinations designed in partnership with Lowder-Tascarella Hospitality, The Shelborne’s culinary offering is bold but grounded. Michelin-starred Chef Abram Bissell leads the charge, alongside beverage savant Christopher Lowder.

Pauline, the signature restaurant, focuses on refined seafood-forward plates in an elevated but unpretentious setting. Little Torch is an intimate cocktail bar where the atmosphere is as finely tuned as the drink list. The Café nods to local Cuban and Caribbean bakeries, while The Bar shifts from quiet coffee nook to nightlife hub with creations like coconut-aged Manhattans and Cubano Katsu sandos.

Outside, The Pool Deck delivers jerk smash burgers and paletas under striped umbrellas, and the Beach Club offers full food and drink service on the sand. Whether it's a citrus-cured ceviche or a wood-fired flatbread, the hotel’s dining experience embraces Miami’s flavours—then refines them.

Wellness

A historic pool, private cabanas, and calm curated through space, not slogans.

While not a traditional spa hotel, The Shelborne by Proper builds wellbeing into the daily ritual. Serene bathrooms, light-filled rooms, and a sensory-forward approach to design provide an ambient calm throughout.

The historic pool deck—with its preserved diving platform and nine private cabanas—is a space for sun-drenched stillness or easy indulgence. Steps away, the private Beach Club invites longer pauses, where saltwater and shade set the pace. Here, wellness isn’t packaged—it’s ambient, built into how the day unfolds.
